We’re strengthening our long-standing partnership with Newcastle United Foundation with a new programme designed to boost opportunity, employability and wellbeing for people across the North East.
The collaboration will support a network of community hubs that play a vital role in helping young people develop the skills and confidence they need to move closer to the world of work.
At the heart of the agreement is our launch of NU Communities powered by Newcastle Building Society - a major new programme providing sustained backing for the Foundation’s work at community centres in Ashington, Gateshead Metrocentre and Howdon.
Our partnership will also continue to support NUCASTLE powered by Newcastle Building Society, the Foundation’s flagship community hub near St James’ Park.
Together, these hubs are already making a meaningful difference. Through their community-based programmes, the Foundation has supported more than 300 people into employment, delivering life-changing outcomes in areas facing some of the region’s biggest challenges.

Supporting young people into brighter futures
The NU Communities programme will focus on helping young people aged 16 to 24 who are not currently in employment, education or training, or who are looking to take their next step towards work.
Participants will be able to access a wide range of free support, including one-to-one mentoring, mock interviews, CV writing guidance, accredited qualifications and 14-week personal development programmes delivered by dedicated staff based within the hubs.
Colleagues from Newcastle Building Society will also play an active role, delivering workshops across the centres to help young people build employability skills and improve their financial confidence.
Steve Beharall, CEO of Newcastle United Foundation, said:
“The North East is a region with huge potential, but too many young people still face barriers to opportunity, including limited access to the right support.
“Through our community hubs we’re meeting people where they are and helping them build the skills, wellbeing and pathways to bringing them closer to the jobs market.
“Our extended partnership with Newcastle Building Society is vital in supporting young people to take the next steps to becoming work ready. Through NU Communities, powered by Newcastle Building Society, we’re combining sustainable support and practical expertise to create lasting impact in our communities.”

A people-first approach to community investment
The new programme builds on our broader commitment to supporting local communities and creating lasting social impact.
Alongside providing accessible, face-to-face financial services through our branch network, we also offer free-to-use community spaces in many of our branch locations. These spaces provide safe, welcoming environments for local groups to meet, connect and strengthen relationships.
Andrew Haigh, Chief Executive at Newcastle Building Society, said:
“Our partnership with Newcastle United Foundation reflects our long-term commitment to supporting communities. Together, we’re creating a better future by delivering meaningful, grassroots impact where it matters most.
“These community centres already play an important role in promoting wellbeing and resilience. Through the NU Communities programme, we’re providing a sustainable source of funding and support to help create better outcomes for young people and overcome the challenges they face.
“As a member-owned organisation with a clear focus on providing face-to-face financial services, we’re continuing to build our presence in communities across the region - reinforcing our commitment to the North East.”
Strengthening communities across the region
By combining the Foundation’s community expertise with our own long-term investment and local presence, this expanded partnership aims to create a stronger, more inclusive future for our region.
Through NU Communities, more people across the North East will have access to the support, skills and opportunities they need to thrive.
