At 38, Alex Mclaughlin has realised his dream of getting onto the property ladder. With the help of Newcastle Building Society, he has bought his own home, a bungalow in his hometown.

After years of living with his parents, he was ready for a place of his own but wanted to stay close to the community he knew well. Having spent several years carefully saving to put down a deposit, he turned to Newcastle Building Society for mortgage advice after a recommendation from his dad and positive word of mouth from his friends.

He chose to get a mortgage from Newcastle Building Society not just for its strong reputation, but for the support offered through its First Time Buyer Coaching service.

"The process was smooth and far less stressful than I expected. The mortgage adviser was incredibly supportive and made sure I had all the information I needed to make the right decisions. Everyone I dealt with at Newcastle Building Society was amazing."

Now happily settled into his new home, he’s grateful for the help he received. Alex said, “I chose a bungalow because I didn’t need a big house and I like the idea of having less space to maintain in comparison to a larger home. I’m very glad I took the steps I did to get on the property ladder. Having that guidance made all the difference.”

Newcastle Building Society’s First Time Buyer Coaches guide people through the journey of getting onto the property ladder. They build personalised plans with realistic timelines and clear steps to help you meet your goal. They can support you with working out how much deposit to save, all the way through to stepping in the door of your new home.

“When it comes to the big things in life, like getting your own place, it can really help to have a conversation with someone who understands all the ins and outs. We know from our members that they value having the choice in how they manage their money, and sometimes having meaningful conversations about achieving the dream of homeownership is best done face-to-face.”
