We’ll soon be opening the doors to our new home at Monument

We're moving from our current Northumberland Street location to 155 - 159 Grainger Street. This puts our friendly and knowledgeable approach to financial services right in the heart of our home city.

We've been working hard to breathe new life into the building for the benefit of our members and the communities of the city and beyond. There will be a full-service branch, with space for those all-important face-to-face conversations about your money. There will also be bookable rooms where local businesses, community groups and charities can meet, talk and plan a better future together.

Until our new home is ready, you can visit our Northumberland Street branch and receive the same friendly service you’re used to.

What to expect from Monument – so much more than a branch

A flexible, welcoming space over five floors for local groups, businesses, charities, and like-minded people to connect and collaborate. Monument is a space for the whole community to use to help the city and wider region thrive. You'll see:

  • Over 8,400 sq ft of space across five refurbished floors
  • A new full-service branch
  • Accessible meeting rooms across all floors
  • Flexible events space overlooking the iconic Grey's Monument
  • Bookable spaces for events, meetings and community collaboration
  • A warm and welcoming team

Monument through the years

The 200-year-old Grade II listed building, 155-159 Grainger Street, is full of history. Generations have had fond memories tied to this location, as it has been home to popular retailers likes Boots, Geordie Jeans, and French Connection over the years.

By refurbishing all five floors, we’re restoring more than a third of the total space back into public use for the first time in decades.

Andrew Haigh, Chief Executive Officer at Newcastle Building Society

“As well as an investment in the bricks and mortar of a building, Monument is an investment in the social and community fabric of our city, which will serve the city’s future for generations to come. A historic building reimagined as a vibrant community hub, the work on Monument shows we’re wholly committed to the places where we are present by bringing together partners, charities, and civic and community leaders in a central space, reflecting our ambition as a place-based, purpose-led organisation.”

Grant funding supports local homelessness charity

Changing Lives, a Newcastle-based charity, supports around 14,500 individuals facing challenges such as homelessness, unemployment, addiction, and domestic abuse through over 100 projects every year. A large amount of their work is centered in the city, with Monument being a key location for delivering key support. The Newcastle Building Society Community Fund has donated a £3,000 grant to aid the charity's Multiple Exclusions Team, who offer welfare checks and essential supplies to the city's most vulnerable residents throughout the year.
