Newcastle Building Society will be holding a food drive and fundraiser this winter to support FareShare North East tackle food insecurity and waste in the region.

FareShare North East is the largest food redistribution charity in our region. They rescue good-to-eat, surplus food from going to waste and distribute them to over 230 charities and community groups in the North East, where they are turned into healthy nutritious meals for thousands of vulnerable people.

From the 3rd - 10th December, we’re inviting colleagues and members to take part in our winter fundraiser. We’re working towards a target of £14,000 to help FareShare North East purchase a new van to continue their vital food collections and deliveries.

Their current fleet of five vans travel right across the region, delivering to over 20 locations per day.

The new van will help deliver another 150 tonnes of food per year, which is equal to 357,150 meals! Redistributing the food will also help prevent nearly 385.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere.

“Our support for FareShare North East reflects our commitment to address a couple of the key issues in our region surrounding food poverty and sustainability and the environment. If we can help raise enough for a new van, we’ll be helping to keep FareShare North East on the road this winter and continue their vital deliveries of surplus food. It’s a very important cause that we’re proud to be supporting."

As well as fundraising, 27 of our branches in the North East will be a collection point for FareShare North East. Colleagues, members, and the local community can pop into their local branch to drop-off non-perishable food or toiletries, or support our fundraiser with a donation.

Fundraising for FareShare North East is just one of the ways we’re delivering on our strategic community priorities.

We used the unique data and insight from Vital Signs North East 2024 to focus our community priorities on the key needs of our region, which includes helping tackle issues linked to food poverty and sustainability and the environment.
