Do you know you as a Newcastle Building Society Member you can nominate a charity for a grant? Successful nominations could receive grants from the Newcastle Building Society Community Fund, at the Community Foundation.
In this guide, we'll walk you through why it's so important to support our communities and how to nominate a charity. We'll also explore how previous grants have made a huge impact for local organisations across the North East, Cumbria, and North Yorkshire.
The Newcastle Building Society Community Fund
We have been partners with the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland for over 30 years. Setting up the Newcastle Building Society Community Fund at the Community Foundation in 2016, which allows us to deliver greater impact through our charitable giving.
Through our community grants programme, we support local charities and projects devoted to addressing issues connected to our strategic community priorities:
- Sustainability and the environment
- Food poverty
- Work and opportunity
- Debt management
- Homelessness
Impacting local charities
The Newcastle Building Society Community Fund supports local charities in the North East, Cumbria, and North Yorkshire. Since 2016, over £1.8m in grants has been awarded to more than 500 charities, positively impacting communities.

Building Futures East
Building Futures East received a grant of £4,450 to help increase the capacity of their community garden, build new planters and polytunnels and help with staffing costs. The riverside garden will help give local people a peaceful place to work together and build their skills, while the food grown there will help support Building Futures East’s foodbank with food for all its service users.
Supercharging our grant giving
We donated an extra £1m to the Community Fund to create further grant funding for communities. The donation brings the total value of the Fund to over £3.5m, supporting our region for generations to come.
How does it work
So we reach the charities that matters the most to our communities, nominations are open all year round with community grants being made in the Spring and Autumn of each year. All nominations go to the Community Foundation who do the necessary checks with charities.
Because we receive so many wonderful nominations, we can only get back to those who have been successful when we announce our grant giving in Spring and Autumn.
