What is a passbook savings account?

A passbook savings account means that you will receive a passbook, which is a passport-sized booklet that contains all the information related to your savings account. It records your savings activity, such as deposits, withdrawals, the interest you’ve earned and your account balance.

We'll continue offering passbooks to Members who want one

While other banks and building societies withdraw passbooks, we listen to our Members who tell us it’s important that they can access their account with a passbook if they want to. That's why we'll continue to offer them to those who want one, as part of our wide range of services all available on your high street.

If you prefer to visit one of our branches in person to manage your savings account, a passbook might be the best option for you. Please speak to one of our customer advisers in branch, who will be able to give you all the relevant information about setting up a savings account with a passbook.

Once you have your passbook, bring it with you when you visit our branches and our customer advisers will update it with the details of your transaction. But don’t worry, if you leave your passbook behind by mistake, we’ll always try to assist you and complete any transactions you wish to make.

For our fixed rate savings account Members, where there are typically fewer transactions to record, we offer passcards as a smaller alternative to our passbooks.

Benefits of using a passbook

There are lots of benefits to managing your money online, but plenty of people also want the option of popping into their local branch and speaking to someone face-to-face. When opened in branch we can offer passbooks for most of our savings' accounts. See our most popular passbook savings accounts.

Easy to understand

A passbook is a great option for people of all ages who don’t want to manage their account online and wish to see someone face-to-face. It’s a physical place where all your transactions and account information will be recorded. All you need to do is pop into a branch with your passbook, and one of our friendly customer advisers will be able to provide you with excellent customer service and answer any questions you may have.

Peace of mind

Everything is in one place, your passbook! All of your account information and transactions are in once place, in your possession. Our passbook savings accounts are managed in one of our branches. That means you can spend time with one of our expert customer advisers and get much-needed peace of mind that your savings are working for you.

Budgeting friendly

Your passbook is a great way to help you plan your financial goals, budget, and manage your finances. It has all the details of your savings account transactions, helping you stay in control. If you like to physically see your savings grow, a passbook is an effective way to motivate your saving. You’ll see every transaction you make, making you feel good and encouraging you to stick to your savings plan.
