A united force for good
At Newcastle Building Society we're passionate about the people and potential of the North East - a passion that is shared by Newcastle United Foundation.
Inspired by this passion, we've committed £1.1m to help the Foundation deliver its lifechanging work in the community.
Together we're working to:
- Tackle issues surrounding employability within our region
- Grow local talent and create a future-ready talent pool for employers in our region
- Reduce the barriers to employment
- Increase the employability skills within our communities
- Build the confidence and capability of young people in our region
- Raise the aspirations of people not in education, employment, or training
- Grow a stronger economy
Beyond this, we also offer young people work experience to help them connect with a regional employer, build their confidence, and give an insight into an industry that they might not otherwise get
Meet Jonny Wilson
Before taking part in the Foundation’s employability programme, Jonny Wilson struggled with his confidence and wasn’t sure how to make the final step into employment. After completing two weeks of work experience with us, Jonny built a strong foundation of skills and confidence to take his first role. He is now enjoying a career with Sky.
By supporting the Foundation with employability programmes, like the one Jonny participated in, we help to create opportunities for young people who need some extra support to make a step into employment.
NUCASTLE powered by Newcastle Building Society is the Foundation’s new, high-tech community hub in the centre of Newcastle. It is used to engage young people with education, skills and careers activities through football, sports, health and wellbeing programmes and more, and is just a goal-kick away from St James' Park.
Building a brighter future for all
Our colleagues play a very important role in our partnership with the Foundation. They volunteer their time, energy, and skills to help the Foundation deliver a wider range of activities as part of the NU Futures programme, which supports young people who are the furthest from employment.
Activities supported in 2023 include CV writing, mentoring, digital STEM learning, and employability and money management workshops.

Game changing support
To support the mental wellbeing of our colleagues, we signed up to be a business champion of the Foundation’s ‘Be A Game Changer’ initiative – a campaign that uses football to encourage everyone to talk openly about mental health.
By becoming a champion, colleagues have access to a variety of mental health support and resources, including wellbeing workshops and exclusive opportunities to get active, and strengthens the existing range of resources we provide.
