Newcastle Building Society colleagues laced up their boots for a challenging hike for their winter fundraiser to help FareShare North East tackle food poverty in the region.
Twelve colleagues from across the organisation trekked from FareShare North East’s warehouse in Westerhope, Newcastle, back to our Head Office in Cobalt Business Park, North Tyneside.
The 12 mile route followed a typical journey that one of the FareShare North East vans would make in a day when making food collections and drop-offs, and included special drop-offs at charities and community groups on the way.
As part of the challenge each team member carried a backpack filled with essential food items.
FareShare North East is the largest food redistribution charity in the region. Their five vans distribute good-to-eat, surplus food to charities and community groups, delivering to over 20 locations per day.
The walk was part of a campaign to raise £14,000 to help FareShare North East buy a new van, which would help the charity deliver a further 150 tonnes of food every year, which is equal to 357,150 meals.
Sean Rainbow, our Community Assistant, said:
“With heavy backpacks full of food, it was a tough walk and a long day for the team, but we wanted to experience what it’s like for the fantastic team at FareShare North East, visiting charities and community groups who do so much with their food deliveries. Fundraising for the new van means we can help FareShare North East help even more people in the region, supporting vulnerable people with warm, nutritious meals and tackling one of the most pressing challenges in our communities.”
We’ve been collecting non-perishable, essential food items and toiletries for the FareShare North East vans to come pick up.
