Newcastle Building Society opened the doors to its new branch in Pickering on September 30th, bucking the national trend of branch closures and restoring essential banking services in the North Yorkshire town.

Pickering is the 32nd branch in our network and marks the latest phase in a multi-year, multi-million-pound investment into high streets and communities in our region.

We expanded our existing financial advice offering in Pickering, to create a brand new full-service branch on Market Place.

As well as our full range of branch services and a team of friendly experts available to talk to face to face, the new branch is also home to a OneBanx multi-bank kiosk.

A OneBanx kiosk located inside the Newcastle Building Society Pickering branch.

The kiosk allows personal and small business customers to withdraw and deposit cash into their own bank account, regardless of whether they’re a customer of ours or not.

For residents, visitors, and businesses in Pickering who continue to use cash and rely on convenient access to their account, the kiosk is expected to become an important lifeline.

Colleagues welcomed the first customers to the branch just months after the last bank in town announced it was closing its doors in January 2025, because of falling customer usage and increased preference for digital banking.

In contrast, we’re seeing our branch savings balances grow at rate more than double the market average, with a growth of 7.5% in branches compared to a rest of market average of 2.8% across all channels.

“As a mutual, we’ll continue to focus on being available in the way our members and communities need us. As well as investing in our online services, this means investing heavily in our branch network – providing customers with choice in how they manage their finances, by growing and extending our presence in the communities we serve. And we’re seeing the evidence that this is what our communities want as people vote with their feet and balances and customer numbers grow.”

Andrew adds: “We believe high streets are always better with branches, helping to create value in the community beyond our products and services, and the fantastic branch team are already actively engaging with the people and communities of Pickering and beyond.”

Already this year, we opened the doors to our new community branch in North Shields in partnership with YMCA North Tyneside, building on the success of our community partnership branch model in Knaresborough, Hawes, Yarm and Wooler.

Future branch plans include  a new flagship community branch in Newcastle city centre opening early next year, and our 33rd branch in Tynemouth library to be delivered in partnership with North Tyneside Council.
